A former top Trump White House official has called the former president a "fascist" who allegedly insisted that Hitler "did some good things, too."

John F. Kelly, Donald Trump's longest-serving chief of staff, in an interview with the New York Times confirmed previous reports that Trump had praised Hitler and that he has admired other dictators.

"Certainly the former president is in the far-right area, he's certainly an authoritarian, admires people who are dictators — he has said that. So he certainly falls into the general definition of fascist, for sure," Kelly told the Times. "He commented more than once that, you know, that Hitler did some good things, too."

The former Marine General also shared that Trump had been confused as to why government officials took oaths to the constitution, and not to him. Kelly said in the interview that it appeared that Trump preferred "the dictator approach to government."

Kelly also confirmed that Trump had referred to disabled veterans or those who had died in combat for the U.S. military as "losers" and "suckers," which was first reported on by The Atlantic in 2020.

"Whenever John McCain's name came up, he'd go through this rant about him being a loser, and all those people were suckers, and why do you people think that people getting killed are heroes? And he'd go through this rant." Kelly told the Times. "To me, I could never understand why he was that way — he may be the only American citizen that feels that way about those who gave their lives or served their country."

Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for Trump's campaign, said in a statement to NBC News that Kelly had "totally beclowned himself" in discussing "debunked stories" from his time with the Trump administration. Cheung added, "President Trump has always honored the service and sacrifice of all of our military men and women."
