President Donald Trump and top officials were evacuated from the White House Correspondents' dinner after shots were fired in the premises.
Live footage from the event showed attendees scrambling and the Secret Service escorting Trump as the sound of gunfire could be held.
Trump provided details about the incident shortly after it happened, praising the Secret Service and law enforcement officers for a "fantastic job."
".The First Lady, plus the Vice President, and all Cabinet members, are in perfect condition," Trump said. He added that the event will be rescheduled within 30 days.
Trump also shared footage of the shooter sprinting at the Hilton Hotel as agents reacted to the shooting. He then shared an image of the suspect after being apprehended. One officer took a shot in a bullet-proof vest and is expected to survive. Trump said he spoke to the agent and "he's doing great."
Speaking at the White House briefing room after the incident, Trump said the suspect was armed with multiple weapons.
"He was taken down by some very brave members of Secret Service, and they acted very quickly," Trump said. He called the suspect a "thug" who "attacked our Constitution," adding that he is believed to be from California.
"I guess he lives in California, and he's a sick person, a very sick person, and we don't want things like this to happen," he said.
