Former President Donald Trump stated in an interview with ABC News that he was unaware of the controversial comments made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe during a campaign rally. Hinchcliffe had referred to Puerto Rico as a 'floating island of garbage' while speaking at the event, which took place at Madison Square Garden.
Despite Hinchcliffe being the opening act at Trump's rally, the former President claimed that he did not know who the comedian was. Trump mentioned, 'I don’t know him, someone put him up there. I don’t know who he is.'
Following the backlash received after Hinchcliffe's remarks, the Trump campaign released a statement on Sunday night clarifying that the comment made by the comedian did not align with the views of President Trump or the campaign.
Hinchcliffe's comment sparked immediate criticism, with many expressing disapproval of the derogatory language used to describe Puerto Rico. The comedian's presence at the rally and his controversial statement have since become topics of discussion.
