Trump Campaign Dismisses Biden's Attack Ad As Irrelevant

Final 2020 U.S. presidential campaign debate in Nashville

President Biden's recent attack ad targeting former President Trump's criminal conviction has sparked controversy and criticism from various quarters.

The ad, titled 'Character Matters,' focuses on Trump's recent conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records in New York. Despite Trump's plea of not guilty and plans to appeal, the ad portrays the election as a choice between a convicted criminal and a president fighting for families.

However, the Trump campaign swiftly dismissed the ad as irrelevant to everyday Americans, with press secretary Karoline Leavitt calling it a waste of $50 million. Leavitt argued that the ad would not alter the race's trajectory and accused Biden of diverting attention from more pressing issues.

Even within Biden's own party, there are voices cautioning against overemphasizing Trump's legal troubles. Political strategist Steve Schmidt criticized the ad as soulless and ineffective, suggesting it would not resonate with voters or sway opinions.

Despite the ad blitz, recent polling data indicates that Trump's conviction has not significantly impacted his support among voters. Polls in battleground states like Iowa show Trump maintaining a lead over Biden, with little change in voter sentiment following the conviction.

While Biden's approval ratings hit a low during Trump's trial, his numbers have remained relatively stable in recent months. Some Democratic operatives have advised the Biden campaign to focus on issues that directly impact American voters rather than solely targeting Trump's legal challenges.

Former President Obama adviser David Axelrod emphasized the importance of connecting with voters on key issues and drawing a contrast between Biden's agenda and Trump's personal controversies. Rep. Jared Huffman echoed this sentiment, warning against an excessive focus on Trump at the expense of addressing critical policy matters.

Previous multimillion-dollar ad campaigns against Trump have been deemed ineffective, raising questions about the strategic value of targeting Trump's legal issues in the current political landscape.
