Millions of Americans battling student loan debt may once again feel pressure as the Trump administration explores how to recoup money on unpaid federal loans. Those who have defaulted on such loans could see repercussions that go well beyond accruing balances, with the possibility of wage garnishment, withholding of tax refunds, and other forms of benefit reduction. According to a report by student loan lawyer Adam S. Minsky on Forbes, the US Department of Education is reportedly planning to begin collection activities against defaulting borrowers.
The Education Department has been reported to be coordinating with the Treasury Department on a plan that could include hiring private collectors. But a spokeswoman for the Education Department has denied those reports.
