US President Donald Trump told a White House 9/11 event that two firefighters lifted him to safety at Ground Zero, a rescue tale fact-checkers and critics branded as fabricated 'stolen valor' days before he skips Friday's Ground Zero memorial.
Speaking at a Steel Across America event at the White House on Tuesday, Trump said he took a crew of his own workers downtown after the 2001 attacks and ended up beside the former US Steel Building, now One Liberty Plaza, as it appeared close to collapse. He said two firemen 'grabbed me under the arm' and 'literally lifted me up' before running with him to safety.
