A man in his 30s was being treated at John Hunter Hospital on Thursday night, April 11, after a truck and three cars crashed in a pile-up that caused a traffic nightmare near the Hexham Bridge earlier in the afternoon.

Paramedics treated five people at the scene around 5.30pm as emergency services closed lanes causing significant delays. The northbound shoulder on Maitland Road remained closed near the crash site just off the Hexham Bridge around 8pm with moderate traffic, NSW Transport advised.

The man was taken to John Hunter via Ambulance suffering minor head and neck injuries, a spokesperson for the service said. He was believed to be in a stable condition, and was the only patient who needed hospital treatment.

The traffic incident ended just before 7pm, but motorists were advised to slow down and drive carefully in the area.

Transport for NSW and NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) crews were also at the scene.
