Brutally honest Troy Deeney has confessed he hasn't got everything he wanted from signing for Birmingham - as the striker revealed he knocked back a move to Celtic before the switch.
The veteran frontman is facing a sliding doors moment in his career with his deal up in the summer at the English Championship side, with a contract offer on the table from relegation-threatened Birmingham despite off the pitch issues stemming from an ownership tug of war. However, the Blues' captain admits he is taking his time to weigh up his options - noting that when he left Watford he had an option to move to the Scottish Premiership.
Deeney left the Hornets in the summer of 2021 after helping the club where he spent 11 years return to the English Premier League. That summer marked an overhaul at Celtic Park, with Ange Postecoglou arriving in Glasgow's east end to rebuild the side as he stepped into the hot seat to replace Neil Lennon.
In the same window Celtic would snap up Kyogo Furuhashi and Giorgios Giakouamakis to bolster their attacking options. Speaking to Kammy and Ben's Proper Football Podcast, Deeney admitted he was weighing up his future away from Birmingham stating: "There's an offer there. But I'm just seeing how it looks.
"It's not about the money. Is there a coaching role there? They want me to do coaching but the project has to be right. When I parted ways at Watford, there were options to go to Celtic, Middlesbrough, abroad or Birmingham.
"Birmingham was the least attractive in terms of what it was. And it wasn't everything that was sold at the start. But now I understand the dynamics of it.
"It's going to be more about time than money. It's a question of 'do you want to invest more time?' or do you go 'thanks, but no thanks' and move on to pastures new?"
