Tropical system strengthens as it heads toward Caribbean, hurricane center says

ORLANDO, Fla. — A tropical wave that emerged off the coast of Africa is more likely to form into a tropical depression or storm as it steams toward the Caribbean this week, the National Hurricane Center said.

In its 2 p.m. Friday tropical outlook, the NHC said the system located between the west coast of Africa and the Cape Verde Islands was producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms.

“Environmental conditions appear to be conducive for gradual development, and a tropical depression could form during the early to middle portions of next week while the system moves westward at 15 to 20 mph across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic,” the NHC stated.
