Tropical Storm Isaias has formed in the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to strengthen into a hurricane by Thursday or early Friday, according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC). The storm formed on the morning of October 7, 2026, after a depression strengthened over the warm waters of the Gulf. As of Wednesday, Isaias was about 580 miles (935 km) southwest of the mouth of the Mississippi River, with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (65 km/h). As per reports, Isaias may strengthen rapidly due to favourable conditions including very warm Gulf waters and relatively light wind shear.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has meanwhile declared a state of emergency in 25 counties as the storm moves toward the northern Gulf Coast. DeSantis said the emergency declaration would give communities additional time and resources to prepare for possible impacts.
