Currently, Tropical Storm Debby is gaining strength due to warm water temperatures just off the Atlantic Coast. The National Hurricane Center reports that Debby now has sustained winds of 60 mph, marking a 15 mph increase from earlier today.
Debby is moving slowly to the northeast at a pace of 5 mph. It is expected to gradually turn north later today and is forecasted to make landfall on the South Carolina coast between Charleston and Myrtle Beach either tonight or early Thursday morning.
While there is a possibility of further strengthening before landfall, the storm's center is facing challenges from dry air, which may hinder its development potential.
Despite these obstacles, Debby remains a formidable tropical storm and is anticipated to produce dangerous storm surge along the coasts of the Carolinas, with levels reaching up to 3 feet above normal high tide until landfall. Additionally, the Southeast region can expect heavy rainfall from Debby through at least Thursday.
