Trophies Matter More Than Milestones, Says Gautam Gambhir After India’s T20 World Cup Triumph

India crushed New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs in the final to secure their third T20 World Cup title, capping off a dominant campaign under captain Suryakumar Yadav.

Even as celebrations erupted across the country, Gambhir used the moment to emphasize a broader message about the priorities of team sport.

“I think my simple philosophy with Surya has always been that milestones don’t matter. It’s the trophies that matter,” Gambhir said after the win.

Focus on Team Success

The former Indian opener believes Indian cricket has spent too long celebrating individual numbers rather than team achievements.

“For too long in Indian cricket we’ve spoken about milestones,” Gambhir said. “And I hope, till I’m there, we’re not going to talk about milestones. Stop celebrating milestones — celebrate trophies.”

Having played a crucial role in India’s triumphs during his playing days, Gambhir understands the value of match-winning performances on the biggest stage.

According to him, the ultimate goal in a team sport should always be winning championships, not chasing personal records.

“The bigger purpose of a team sport is to be winning trophies, not scoring individual runs,” he added. “It has never mattered to me, and it will never matter to me.”

Suryakumar Yadav Shares the Same Mindset

Gambhir also revealed that captain Suryakumar Yadav shares the same philosophy, which has helped shape the current team culture.

“I have been very fortunate that Surya and I were on the same page, especially on this front,” Gambhir explained.

Sanju Samson’s Selfless Approach

Gambhir highlighted the performances of Sanju Samson during the business end of the tournament as a perfect example of playing for the team rather than personal milestones.

Samson delivered explosive knocks in crucial matches, including a remarkable unbeaten 97 in the virtual quarter-final, followed by key contributions in the semi-final and the final.

“You can see it in the last three games what Sanju did,” Gambhir said. “Imagine if he had been playing for a milestone — we probably wouldn’t have got 250.”

Ignoring Social Media Noise

Away from the field, Gambhir also dismissed criticism that often surfaces on social media during India’s highs and lows.

“My accountability is not towards any social media,” he stated. “My accountability is towards those 30 people sitting in the dressing room.”

Building a Team on Trust

For Gambhir, the foundation of a successful team lies in trust and belief.

“You pick the team on trust and faith. You don’t pick on hope,” he said. “And when you pick someone on trust and faith, you don’t lose that after four or five games.”

With India lifting another major ICC trophy, Gambhir’s philosophy appears to be taking root — shifting the focus from personal records to collective glory.
