A project to rebuild Troon station after a devastating fire is set to cost rail chiefs £5m.
Work to reinstate the iconic Victorian era travel hub is fully on track with Network Rail setting their sights on having the new platform one building ready for when the Open Championships come to town next summer.
Contractor AmcoGiffen have been appointed for the multi-million project which will see the building redesigned to modern standards, whilst keeping the historic backdrop of the previous station building which burnt to the ground after a devastating fire in July 2021.
The Cumbernauld based firm have worked on a number of stations including Edinburgh Waverly.
Liam Sumpter, chief operating officer at Network Rail said: “We are delighted to have appointed AmcoGiffen as the main contractor on the redevelopment of Troon station.
“With the community and South Ayrshire Council fully on board with the designs for the station, the team is keen to get on site and get the work underway.
“Separately, we are already on site preparing for the reinstallation of the canopies which will be erected ahead of the programme. We’ll then move forward to the construction phase and focus on delivering the new station building for the community as soon as possible.”
Alan Kane, operations director for AmcoGiffen said: “We are delighted that Network Rail has appointed AmcoGiffen to reinstate the fire-damaged station building at Troon.
“We have previously demonstrated our expertise in stations through projects such as Edinburgh Waverley, Robroyston and Dunbar and we look forward to applying this to the work at Troon.
“Early discussions with the Network Rail project team have been really positive and we’re looking forward to getting started on site.”
Network Rail staff have been on site since the start of July, repairing the canopies at the station.
The station's platform one car park has been closed off through the duration of the works.
Fresh pictures have shown the progress of the works, with metal frames set ready for the new glass canopies to be added.
