'Trip of a lifetime': Sam Heughan hints at new project after Outlander

OUTLANDER star Sam Heughan has hinted at a new project, telling fans "the journey to Everest begins" on social media.

The 44-year-old Scottish actor, who recently wrapped on shooting for Outlander, posted a picture of himself with a helicopter in the background.

His caption said: "We have an excellent local Nepali team and the brilliant @mountainworld as guide. Trip of a lifetime."

Fans have speculated Heughan might be taking on Mount Everest as part of a documentary he has previously spoken about hoping to do following Outlander.

In 2023, Heughan said it was "a dream" to see the highest mountain in the world and wrote about it in his memoir Waypoints.

He had been pitching a documentary which would follow him retaking the route of British explorer and mountaineer George Mallory.

Mallory made three expeditions up Everest in the 1920s, but disappeared on his third visit. His body was eventually discovered 75 years later.

Heughan said: “I wrote in Waypoints about the Everest movie project that fell through and was disappointed I never made it to Nepal.

“However, more recently, I have been pitching a TV show that follows that dream (and the footsteps of George Mallory) from the UK to the Himalayan plateau and the slopes of Everest.

“Perhaps, if I’m lucky enough and dream hard enough I may yet find myself on the slopes of ‘Chomolungma,’ the earth’s highest mountain.

“However, this time I’ll be better prepared and ensure I’m not walking alone (and carrying plenty of snacks!).”

Heughan also shared images of Nepal and a video of him and his team landing in a village near the mountain.

In December last year, the actor remarked upon a “bittersweet” ending to Outlander, with the second part of the seventh series beginning last month.

It is likely that the eighth and final season – which will consist of 10 episodes – will follow in 2025.
