Renowned Nottingham businessman George Akins Snr, who founded Rock City, has died aged 94. He passed away on Thursday, March 30 and leaves a "fantastic legacy", his family said.
Growing up as a barrow boy in Sneinton and the Lace Market, Mr Akins went on to become a prominent businessman and property owner and developer. His achievements included founding the music venue Rock City in 1980 and building a gambling empire of arcades and casinos.
In a statement issued to Nottinghamshire Live, his family said: "George Akins Snr, left a fantastic legacy having been one of the last of an era. Growing up as a boy in Sneinton and the Lace Market, attending St Marys school briefly, which is now home to the head office of the business he started and which is now run by his sons Sean and George.
"George leaves behind his wife Ellen, his sons, Sean, George and Alex as well as close family friends who will miss him greatly. He was a force of nature who achieved some incredible things in his long and storied life.
"He will be missed greatly and leaves some incredible memories for so many." Mr Akin launched Geo Akins bookmakers, a pioneering company in the betting industry that developed in the 50’s and 60’s.
His casinos included the Victoria Club and the Park Side Club, two premises that became iconic in Nottingham. The clubs were hosts to celebrities such as Liz Taylor and Richard Burton.
