Ios, a small island located in the Aegean Sea, is a popular holiday destination known for its many beaches.
His former school, where he had just completed his leaving certificate, paid tribute to their classmate on Sunday afternoon in a post that celebrated Andrew’s popularity as well as his commitment to football.
They said: "Andrew was not only a popular classmate and friend, but a proud and committed member of our football team.
"He was kind to those around him, honest in all of his endeavours, and a great brother. Andrew will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
"Our thoughts are with Andrew’s family and friends at this extremely difficult time."
In a statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs said that it was “aware of the case” adding that it is “providing consular assistance".
They continued: “As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on the details of individual cases.”
Andrew is the second Irishman to lose his life in the Balkan nation this week. Last Sunday, Rory Deegan, a 22-year-old from Cullohill, Co Laois tragically died while in a swimming pool in Zakynthos.
It is believed that Rory, who was reported to have been found unresponsive in a swimming pool by his friends in the country, had also been in Greece for the purpose of working for a month when the tragic incident took place.
