Tributes paid to 'loving' grandmother hit by car as boy, 12, charged with murder

A woman who was killed after being hit by a car has been described as a "warm and loving" grandmother by her devastated family.

Marcia Grant was pronounced dead at the scene of a road traffic accident around 7.10pm on Wednesday when emergency crews raced to reports of a collision between a car and woman in the Greenhill area of Sheffield.

A 12-year-old boy has since been arrested and charged with murder, the Mirror reports.

Marcia, 60, was described as a "pillar of her community" and devastated relatives say her death has "sent shockwaves through all who knew her".

In an emotional statement released this morning, her family said: "Marcia was a warm, loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend and a pillar of her community.

"Her loss has already sent shockwaves through all who knew her or was lucky enough to be included in her orbit.

"We ask for privacy at this time while further investigations are underway and the family try to come to terms with this enormous loss."

The boy, who was found shortly after the collision, has been charged with murder and is due to appear before Sheffield Youth Court on Saturday, April 8.

Marcia, who described her super power on Facebook as being "a social worker", has been remembered by devastated pals as tributes poured in online.

One friend wrote: “Marcia was a wonderful person. I was lucky to have known her and my heart is breaking for her family."

Gina Thompson said she was a "beautiful lady inside and out".

And Mandy George Jones said: "Marcia one of life's truly genuine caring beautiful people. It was a pleasure to know you and our shifts were never without laughter".

A friend, Leon Fryer, also wrote under the police announcement: “Devastating news, a wonderful lady and a joy to be in her company, our love and condolences to her family & everyone that knew her.

"Sundays won’t be the same".

South Yorkshire Police said formal identification and a post mortem examination are yet to take place.

The force said in a statement: "A 12-year-old boy has been charged in connection with the death of a Sheffield woman.

"The boy, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, has been charged with murder and will appear before Sheffield Youth Court on Saturday 8 April 2023.

"Emergency services were called at 7.10pm on Wednesday 5 April to reports of a collision between a car and a woman in the Greenhill area.

"A 60-year-old woman was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Formal identification is yet to take place but her family has released a statement."

A photograph was shared to social media following the collision, showing a car in the centre of the road with a broken passenger window.

On Thursday a semi-detached house nearby was also taped off as police officers stood guard.

One local arrived sobbing and left flowers with a card. She was helped away by local residents who tried to comfort her.

Another woman arrived and left a note saying: “I’m so sorry for your loss, She was a beautiful soul."

The road remained closed until this early hours of Friday morning and a property remained under police guard yesterday afternoon.

Det Ch Insp Andrea Bowell appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

She said: "This will be a deeply distressing time for the families of those involved in this incident, and I would ask their privacy is respected as they seek to understand what has happened.

"If you have any information in relation to this collision, please contact police on 101 quoting incident number 736 of April 5, 2023.
