Tributes paid to 'gentleman' Pat McCafferty after Falkirk councillor's death

Tributes have poured in for Patrick 'Pat' McCafferty after Falkirk councillor passed away.

Pat, of Grangemouth, died on Saturday, February 5, 2022.

The councillor was a former chair of Zetland Park in Grangemouth.

He had been awarded an OBE by Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace on October 25, 2007.

Steven Matthew from Friends of Zetland Park announced the sad news in a Facebook post.

He said: "We in Friends of Zetland Park were saddened to hear that our former chair Cllr Pat McCafferty OBE passed away yesterday.

"Our thoughts are with his family."

People from across Grangemouth, Falkirk and beyond took to the comments to post their tributes.

Michael Moir wrote: "Sorry to hear this news, a gentleman and a great supporter of Grangemouth for many, many years."

Bill Greig said: "Pat was a great servant to the people of Grangemouth.

"He did more than make his mark, he made a difference and few politicians can say that.

"Condolences to his family."

Alison Meikle added: "So sorry to hear of Pat's passing.

"He was a lovely gentleman who was interested in everyone and loved telling his stories!

"God bless all his family and his church family."

Fellow Falkirk councillor David Balfour commented: "Very sad news. RIP Pat."

Former MSP for Falkirk East Angus MacDonald added: "Sorry to hear this sad news.

"Pat was a long standing colleague from the days of the old Falkirk District Council and I had the pleasure of working with him in the SNP/Independent Administration at Falkirk Council in the 2000s.

"He always called a spade a spade, and you were left in no doubt as to where you stood with him. I always had respect for him, even when we disagreed, and I know he felt passionately about the town and his fellow Portonians.

"Pat was a loyal servant to the people of Grangemouth over many decades and the town will miss him deeply.

"My thoughts and sincere condolences are with his family at this sad time. RIP Pat."

Councillor Cecil Meiklejohn, Leader of Falkirk Council, said: “It’s very sad to hear of Pat’s passing at the weekend and I am sure I can speak on behalf of the many members who came across him, he was a larger than life character who cared passionately about his constituents.

"It was a loss to local government when he stood down but he was still active locally in helping his community my thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.”
