Tributes paid to "beautiful soul" Father Paddy O'Kane after release of poignant poetry memoir

A poetry memoir from a well-known Derry priest has been released only months after he passed away.

Father Paddy O'Kane died suddenly in March after serving the local community for many years. Father O’Kane, who was originally from Culdaff Co Donegal, had previously been parish priest of the Holy Family Parish in the Ballymagroarty area.

'In Sunshine and in Shadow', a collection of poetry written by Fr O'Kane and a foreword by Roma Downey, was released earlier this week.

A spokesperson for Foyle Hospice said: "Father Paddy was a beautiful soul, his selflessness, dedication and compassion was what made him so special. He gave his heart to the people of the town and devoted his life to helping others.

"Father Paddy was very creative; he painted, played music and wrote poetry which he generously shared to help raise funds for Foyle Hospice, a local charity which was close to his heart.

" The front cover is in fact a painting that Paddy had created and it was fitting to have a special cover to enclose the heartfelt words encased in the book.

"Paddy worked closely with local retired teacher Mary Murphy and Foyle Hospice staff to collate and publish a book that would help make a difference."

Donall Henderson, Chief Executive of Foyle Hospice, added: “We are delighted and privileged to have helped create and now share this beautiful book, bringing together the heartfelt poetry of Father Paddy.

"The book was in print when Father Paddy suddenly died. It was always Father Paddy’s wish to make the book available to help raise essential funds for Foyle Hospice.

"Now, with the support of his family and Roma we can bring this beautiful anthology to you all in memory of the dear Father Paddy. We thank the late Father Paddy for his love, his heart and his care and this book will be a lasting legacy, as the words on the pages will bring sunshine in the shadow.”

The book will be launched on Thursday, July 21 at a closed event and is now available to purchase on the Foyle Hospice website HERE.
