Tributes left for boy, 4, tragically killed following off-road motorbike crash in County Durham

Moving tributes have been left at the scene of crash where a four-year-old boy sadly died.

Heart-shaped balloons, teddies and bunches of flowers have been laid at the side of a County Durham road where the tragic accident took place on Sunday (January 23).

It is understood that the little boy had been a passenger on an off-road bike that collided with a lamppost in the Eldon Lane area of Bishop Auckland at around 1pm.

The youngster was flown by air ambulance to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle but was sadly pronounced dead on arrival, the Mirror reports.

On Monday, January 24, a number of handwritten tributes were left in memory of the young boy, along with his photograph and candle, as loved ones and members of the community paid their respects.

Police are investigating the incident and are appealing for witnesses, or anyone with information, to come forward.

A Durham Constabulary spokeswoman said: “Police are investigating following the death of a four-year-old boy in Bishop Auckland.

“It is believed the child had been a passenger on an off-road bike when it collided with a lamppost shortly after 1pm yesterday (Sunday, January 23) in the Eldon Lane area.

“He was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle, but was sadly pronounced dead on arrival.”

The North East Ambulance Service confirmed they were in attendance.

A spokesman for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We received a 999 call just before 1pm to the Bishop Auckland area.

"We dispatched a paramedic ambulance, a rapid response car and the air ambulance.

"A boy was treated at the scene then flown to the RVI in Newcastle by the air ambulance."

Anyone with any information that could help the investigation is asked to call Durham Constabulary on 101, quoting incident number 196 of January 23.
