Tributes for mum who died trying to rescue son in Cork beach tragedy: 'It is devastating'

Tributes have been paid to a mother-of-two who died after attempting to rescue her young son when he got into difficulty swimming.

Joanna Wisniowśka, who was a native of Strzyzow in Poland, rushed into the sea in a bid to help her ten-year-old son off Ballycroneen beach in East Cork shortly before 1pm on Sunday. The boy managed to make his way to rocks on the shore.

But Ms Wisniowśka got into difficulty in the water. She was taken from the sea by the RNLI and transferred to Cork University Hospital (CUH) where she later died.
