Tributes flow for 'hero' firefighter who bravely helped save lives during Stardust nightclub fire

Tributes have poured in for a "hero" Dublin firefighter who helped save many lives when responding to the Stardust nightclub fire.

Bill Redmond, formerly of Walkinstown and Dublin Fire Brigade, Tara Street, sadly passed away on October 24. On February 14, 1981 Mr Redmond and other firefighters were called out to the Stardust nightclub in Artane, where a fire had broken out.

Some 800 people had attended a disco there, of whom 48 died. Taking to social media, Justice for the Stardust48 paid tribute to Mr Redmond following his passing.

They wrote: "Sad news, Firefighter Bill Redmond passed away recently. He was one of the many heroes who saved many lives by repeatedly entering the Stardust on the night 14th Feb 1981. Rest in Peace HERO."

A notice published on RIP.ie reads: "Bill (William) Redmond, 24 October 2022, St Brendan's Crescent, Walkinstown and formerly of Dublin Fire Brigade, Tara Street. Beloved husband of Winnie, loving dad of Bernadette, Liam and the late Trish and a much loved grandad of Thomas, Eric, Michael, Louise, Emma and Kelly.

"Bill will be forever loved and very sadly missed by his loving wife, children, grandchildren sisters and brother Marie, Eileen and Tommy, in-laws, nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours, friends and former colleagues at Dublin Fire Brigade."

Taking to social media, many people praised the brave former firefighter for his service. One person wrote: "Sleep well, You served the city well, may the angels guide this Hero to paradise."

A second said: "Rest in Peace Bill Redmond. Not all heroes wear capes and thank you for your service."
