Tributes flow as troubled footballer dies 'tragically young'

  • Former Manchester City youth player and England under-18 captain Courtney Meppen-Walter has died at the age of 32; the cause and circumstances of the death have not yet been disclosed.
  • Meppen-Walter represented several clubs during his career, including Bury, Carlisle United, Chorley, Stockport, and Telford United.
  • Bury FC said that the club was “deeply saddened”, while Telford United said that Meppen-Walter was “tragically young”.
  • In 2013, the Bury-born defender served half of a 16-month prison sentence for causing the deaths of two people by dangerous driving in central Manchester.
  • He received a further 22-month driving ban in 2019 after being caught drink-driving whilst twice over the legal limit.
