Tributes have flowed in after the death of one of the first firefighters on the scene of the Stardust fire.
Stephen "Macker" McDonald passed away peacefully after a long illness on Wednesday, April 5 at St Francis' Hospice in Raheny. Stephen, who lived in Balbriggan and formerly resided in Kilbarrack and Howth, was cremated last Monday at Dardistown Crematorium.
The Justice for the Stardust 48 campaign led the tributes to the Dublin Fire Brigade veteran, posting on Facebook: "It is with great sadness. We have to announce the passing of Fireman Stephen McDonald recently.

"Stephen was one of the first firefighters on the scene of the Stardust. Thoughts with all his family, friends and colleagues in Dublin Fire Brigade."
A number of others also paid tribute to Stephen online. One said: "What can I say about Stephen that won't be said and retold over and over, when the word gentleman was first said it could be spoken of Stephen. I would have him watching my back within a heart beat. Sleep tight Stephen, your shift is over."
A second wrote: "Rest in peace Stephen, condolences to Yvonne, Lynn, and John, and his extended family." And a third said: "I'm so very sorry for your loss. It sounds like he would have a wonderful man to know. You will all be in my prayers for comfort and peace."
