Tributes flood in for Edinburgh climbing legend dubbed 'best of his generation'

Tributes have flooded in for an Edinburgh climbing legend who was been dubbed "best winter climber of his generation" and "King of the Ben" after the announcement of his recent death.

Jimmy Marshall who was born in the capital made history with climbing pal Robin Smith as they took on the first ascent of Orion Face Direct and the second ascent of Point Five Gully in just seven hours, as opposed to the first ascent team’s time of more than 40 hours.

The ascent of Orion Direct is a climb considered so advanced that Scottish winter mountaineering had to wait a decade before changes in technique and equipment permitted a repeat.

The pair also took on Ben Nevis in 1960 and staying in the Charles Inglis Clark (CIC) Memorial hut, on consecutive days made six difficult, landmark winter ascents using basic equipment.

Jimmy became one of the leading mentors in the Scottish Mountain Club and was an architect by trade who changed Scottish mountaineering forever.

Dozens of tributes have been paid to the legend following his sad passing.

Fort William Mountain Festival wrote: "Having heard the sad news of the passing of Jimmy Marshall, everyone connected with the Fort William Mountain Festival would like to send their heartfelt condolences to Jimmy’s family, friends and loved ones."

They added: "Jimmy won our 2010 Scottish Award for Excellence in Mountain Culture for his incredible achievements in Scottish and UK mountaineering."

Organisation Mountain Magic wrote: "Just heard the news about Jimmy Marshall. He was a brilliant climber who lived an amazing life in a golden age. He became a legend in his own lifetime and inspired a great many climbers who followed him. May he rest in peace."

"I never met him, but felt that I knew him somehow as we shared a love of, and climbed in the same cathedral that is the Buachaille."
