Hollywood is mourning Robert Duvall after the Oscar-winning star of The Godfather, Apocalypse Now and Tender Mercies died this week aged 95, with friends and collaborators remembering him as both a giant of the craft and a deeply loyal mentor.
His wife Luciana confirmed that the actor “passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort”.
Adam Sandler
Adam Sandler, who worked with Duvall on the 2022 Netflix film Hustle, called him “one of the greatest actors we ever had”.
“Such a great man to talk to and laugh with,” Sandler wrote on Instagram. “Loved him so much. We all did. So many movies to choose from that were legendary. Watch them when you can. Sending his wife Luciana and all his family and friends our condolences.”

Viola Davis
Viola Davis reflected on sharing the screen with Duvall in 2018 thriller Widows, writing that it was an “honour” to appear alongside him.
“I was in awe,” she said on Threads. “I’ve always been in awe of your towering portrayals of men who were both quiet and dominating in their humanness. You were a giant… an icon… Greatness never dies. It stays… as a gift. Rest well, sir. Your name will be spoken… May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.”

Michael Keaton
Michael Keaton, who co-starred with Duvall in Ron Howard’s 1994 comedy The Paper, shared a portrait of the actor with a simple, raw message. “Another friend goes down. Acted with and became friends. Shared a great afternoon on my front porch talking about horses. He was greatness personified as an actor. RIP RD.”

Walton Goggins
The White Lotus star Walton Goggins, who had a small role in The Apostle, said Duvall was “the greatest storyteller of all time” in a lengthy Instagram tribute. “The celestial light just lost its glow..It certainly did for me,” he wrote. Calling Duvall “my friend” and “my mentor”, Goggins said the experience of working with him on The Apostle remained “the most important experience of my life” and described the actor as his “North Star” and “my hero”.

Ted Sarandos
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos highlighted how rare Duvall’s career really was, praising his ability to move between scene-stealing character roles and leads. “To be a character actor who can steal every scene in some of the best movies ever made and still be a leading man who can carry films big and small is no small feat in Hollywood,” Sarandos wrote.
“Robert Duvall was that kind of an actor and that kind of a star. Today we lost one of the great — thank goodness we will always have Tom Hagen, Lt. Col. Bill Kilgore, Bull Meechum, Mac Sledge and all of the great characters he immortaliSed for us.”

Josh Gad
Josh Gad summed up what many film fans are feeling, calling Duvall “simply one of the greatest to ever do it”.
“Another day. Another iconic and irreplaceable loss,” he wrote on Threads. “From the Godfather films to Apocalypse Now, from The Apostle to To Kill a Mocking Bird, he wasn’t just in film, he defines it through the ages. RIP.”

Luciana Duvall
In her statement announcing his death, Duvall’s wife Luciana remembered not just a screen legend, but a partner who shaped her everyday life. “Yesterday we said goodbye to my beloved husband, cherished friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time. Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort,” she wrote on Facebook.
“To the world, he was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was simply everything.”

RIP to an icon.
