Trevor Lawrence took a brutal late safety against the Browns to cap another awful game

If we’re talking about former No. 1 overall pick quarterbacks looking lost like Bryce Young, it might be time to throw Trevor Lawrence into this unfortunate discussion.

With the Jacksonville Jaguars trying to get their first win of the 2024 season on Sunday, Lawrence had no answer for the Cleveland Browns’ tenacious defense. The former top pick completed just 14-of-30 passes for a meager 220 yards, with Lawrence never seriously threatening the Cleveland defense en route to an 18-13 defeat.

Lawrence was so horrific on Sunday that he even put an awful cherry on top of his performance. The Jaguars quarterback took a brutal safety at the end of the game that effectively killed a late Jaguars rally.

Note: They still had two timeouts and PLENTy of time, folks.

I understand that Lawrence was probably in an impossible position here. He’s backed up in his own end zone, and if he doesn’t get the ball out quickly, disaster will be certain in almost every scenario. For any quarterback. Even still, Lawrence can’t take this safety on a first-down play. He simply has to get the ball out of his hands and give his team a better chance to win.

Lawrence’s struggles now extend back to a middling 2023 campaign. And his two games to start 2024 present an alarming sample size that perhaps nothing has changed for the Jacksonville signal-caller.
