Trevor Lawrence’s rookie season with the Jacksonville Jaguars was far from stable under coach Urban Meyer. After a 2-11 start to the year and more scandals than owner Shad Khan was willing to deal with, Meyer was fired and Darrell Bevell finished the season as interim head coach.
In the offseason, the Jaguars turned to former Super Bowl winning head coach Doug Pederson to right the ship. According to Lawrence, Pederson’s doing a good job of that.
“To see the improvement of the guys that were here — to see how much better we’ve got, and then obviously the new additions have helped a ton,” Lawrence said Wednesday. “Just the whole mindset, the culture has really flipped, and that’s something that doesn’t happen overnight. So it’s taken a lot of work by a lot of people and I think we’re in great spot right now and we just got to keep building on that.
“I’m excited to now have an opportunity to prove it. This one [against the Washington Commanders] counts and we’re going to have 17 games, at least, to prove who we are.”
After a 2021 season that was plagued by team culture issues, Lawrence is far from the first to speak highly of the difference in the building in 2022. Jaguars executive vice president Tony Khan recently raved about how the team “feels very differently, in a good way” under Pederson.
