Trevor Lawrence’s love for the Waffle House is real, and it’s spectacular

This is the online version of our daily newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning.

Trevor Lawrence became a hero in Jacksonville last Saturday night when he led the Jaguars back from a 27-0 deficit to beat the Chargers, 31-30, in a crazy AFC wild card game that saw the third biggest comeback in NFL playoff history.

Then after the game he became a Jacksonville legend when he chose to celebrate the victory by going to eat a local Waffle House, where he crushed some delicious late-night food with his wife, Marissa, and some teammates.

It doesn’t get more everyman than that and every person in Jacksonville, as well as anyone who has ever taken in the Waffle House experience, absolutely loved it.

On Tuesday, Lawrence was asked by the local media about his trip to the house of waffles and the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft was more than happy to share some details on his celebratory meal and his love for the cherished establishment.

Some highlights:

– Lawrence said his wife called ahead and asked for a reservation. He then quickly laughed and said it was probably the first reservation ever at a Waffle House. I love this planning ahead and I think it was very courteous of his wife to call and give them a heads up that they would be coming there later so the place could be prepared for what would be a crazy night. Just a very sweet move. I love everything about it.

– Lawrence said some teammates had never been to a Waffle House before and he basically just couldn’t let them to go through life without experiencing it. You gotta love that leadership from your QB. Truly a great guy and everything you’d want from a No. 1 overall pick.

– Lawrence said he ordered a Texas bacon cheesesteak with hash browns (with cheese) and a pecan waffle. I live here in Jax and have been to Waffle House a bunch of times and never realized they had a Texas bacon cheesesteak sandwich and now it’s all I can think about. Seriously, It’s 8:44 a.m. as I write this and I’m sitting here wondering if it’s late enough in the day for me to go and get one of those. Also, backing that up with a pecan waffle is impressive as hell. Regular waffles are pretty great. Pecan waffles are OUTSTANDING. What a pro move.

– Lawrence added that his order changes depending on when he’s going in there and that sometimes he’ll get the All-Star Special. I love how it seems like he goes there a lot and is knowledgeable about all parts of the menu. The All-Star Special, by the way, is fantastic. It consists of two eggs (any style), toast, bacon or sausage, home fries (or grits), and a waffle. It’s a perfect breakfast.

– And finally, I loved how he said he gets his home fries with cheese on them and that he’s aware they might call that “covered” at Waffle House and that he should probably start calling it that when he goes in. Dude just has so much respect for the place. A true gentleman. Oh, and if you go to a Waffle House you need to get your home fries covered (a slice of American cheese on top), smothered (with sautéed onions), and peppered (jalapeño peppers). Holy moly am I hungry right now.

Just sit back and watch this man speak his love for the Waffle House:

Lawrence and the Jags have quickly become a fun group to root for and should be the team you’re pulling for if your squad is no longer in the playoffs.

And if they win Saturday in Kansas City I think I know where the party will be when the team gets back home.

Quick hits: Sam Hubbard’s hilarious reaction to TD… Joe Buck has fun with SVP ‘feud’… Tom Brady saying goodbye?… And more.

– Bengals defensive end said the most honest thing on the sideline right after his 98-yard fumble return for a TD against the Ravens last Sunday night.

– Joe Buck and Scott Van Pelt had some fun with their fake feud after the Cowboys-Bucs game.

– Fans were convinced that Tom Brady was pretty much saying goodbye at the end of his postgame press conference.

– Here are the betting odds for the eight remaining teams in the NFL playoffs.
