Trevor Lawrence: ‘I still think our offense is in a great spot’

The Jacksonville Jaguars finished the regular season tenth in total offense and quarterback Trevor Lawrence took a massive step forward from his disastrous rookie season. But the overwhelmingly positive year for the Jaguars offense ended with one of its worst performances.

Jacksonville finished with only 222 yards of offense against the Tennessee Titans, its second lowest total of the season, and scored only one touchdown Saturday. Is that a bad sign for the Jaguars as they head into the postseason for the first time in five years? Lawrence doesn’t think so.

“That’s going to happen from week to week,” Lawrence said Tuesday. “There’s always going to be stuff to clean up, but I think minus a few plays, I think if a few plays go differently, if we’re a little sharper, or in my case, hit a couple throws, the game looks a lot different.

“We’ve just had a few too many of those, but I still think our offense is in a great spot, and the progress we’ve made is still there. Just continue to build off of it.”

Among the mistakes for the Jaguars on Saturday was a trick play gone wrong that ended with a turnover and an overthrow from Lawrence on what should’ve been an easy touchdown for Zay Jones.

While the miscues are correctable for the Jaguars, the margin of error is going to be much slimmer in the postseason and the team can’t afford to carry its struggles into next weekend.

“The offense needs to have a better game than the other night, quite frankly,” Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said Tuesday. “We didn’t do enough. We had opportunities, obviously missed some opportunities in the game that we can learn from, but sometimes that’s the way games go.”

The Jaguars averaged 23.8 points and 357.4 yards per game during the regular season.
