Trent Alexander-Arnold's time on sidelines confirmed after Liverpool's Luis Diaz blow

Trent Alexander-Arnold will join Liverpool team-mate Luis Diaz in missing the Reds' midweek trip to Ibrox after suffering an injury at Arsenal on Sunday.

The England defender didn't re-emerge for the second half at the Emirates Stadium as Jurgen Klopp's side suffered their second league defeat of the campaign. Colombia forward Diaz had already been forced off a few minutes before the break, while Liverpool lost Arthur Melo to injury in the lead-up to the game in north London.

Diaz faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines, with the former Porto star expected to be out of action until after the World Cup. While Alexander-Arnold's absence is not expected to be as long, Klopp will still face some time without one of the most valued members of his squad.

"Trent never, in seven years, went off if he could have played on," Klopp said after the defeat. He was in too much pain, it started swelling immediately, so we will have to see."

The England international suffered an ankle problem in north London, with a scan needed to determine the extent of the injury. And now, according to The Times, he is definitely unavailable for the game against Rangers in Glasgow and is thought to be a "major doubt" for Sunday's meeting with reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.

Joe Gomez was brought on to replace Alexander-Arnold in Sunday's 3-2 loss. However, summer signing Calvin Ramsay could be another option, with the Scottish youngster having made a Liverpool bench for the first time in the home victory against Rangers last week.

Alexander-Arnold's fellow defender Virgil van Dijk gave a worrying update after Sunday's defeat, which saw the Reds fall 14 points behind league leaders Arsenal. Klopp's team have now gone three league games without a victory, with their last win coming against Newcastle United on August 31.

"Confidence is definitely a thing that plays a part but you know, we are all human beings and sometimes you need a bit of confidence in certain moments and it could also if your confidence is not as high not help you in situations," the Dutch international said.

"Like I said before, every human being in any job needs a little bit of confidence in order to perform at the highest level. If you are not winning at the highest level like we are used to, then confidence is creeping away but we know it can turn around just like that, we have to work hard."

If Liverpool lose against Manchester City on Sunday, they will have dropped 17 points in the league. When they won the title in 2019-20, they only dropped 15 across the entire season.
