Trent Alexander-Arnold's stellar display on Monday night at Leeds was greeted with a bear hug from Luis Diaz at full-time.
The Liverpool right-back is enjoying a more advanced role, which he was able to revel in as the Reds hit six past relegation-threatened Leeds at Elland Road. Jurgen Klopp's side hit four in the second-half to record a 6-1 win with Alexander-Arnold particularly influential.
The England star had over 140 touches and was able to showcase his passing dexterity as he dictated the play. Alexander-Arnold's greatest strength has long been his quality in the opposition half and his position, coupled with Leeds' poor defending, allowed him to excel.
Diaz, who was on the bench as he continued his return from a lengthy injury, was among those impressed as he embraced the 24-year-old. Gary Lineker was equally as impressed as he said on social media: "Said it for years: I’d love to see @TrentAA play in midfield regularly. It’s the position he grew up playing. Play to your strengths."
Alexander-Arnold came through the club's academy as a midfielder, before transitioning to a full-back in an effort to aid his first-team chances. His lack of experience in a back four has regularly been evident, but Klopp has long persevered with the position.
The German was full of praise for his efforts in Yorkshire: "He won the ball back for the first goal from that position as well, stepping really out there - it was good. Yeah, impressive. I think also the highlight was then the last pass [his assist for Nunez], but he had a few more from that position. Wherever Trent is [on the pitch] he can be decisive with his passes, he was very often for us, that's how it is, tonight was a good game, you could see that he enjoyed it."
Diogo Jota was able to end a lengthy goal drought against Leeds as a host of the club's forward were able to get in on the act. The Portuguese star has been missing through injury but rediscovered his goalscoring touch in Yorkshire.
Klopp though is still wanting more from the former Wolves man: "Yeah, [he was] injured too long, same like Lucho [Diaz], and that's obviously tricky. Diogo was involved in a lot of top, top moments, won the ball back and set up Mo's first. Still, you can see there is space for improvement and he has some moments where you can see the rhythm maybe [is] not 100 per cent."
Liverpool's next assignment is a home match against Nottingham Forest, who are also trying to fight the drop. Earlier this season the Reds were on the receiving end of a shock defeat at the City Ground.
