NEW DELHI: A 100-foot tall tree fell in a residential area in south Delhi’s Greater Kailash II, damaging a few cars. The locals expressed worry at the regularity with which trees seem to be falling, with one having fallen in a busy road nearby just a week ago and another small one just recently.
The semal or silk-cotton tree (Bombax ceiba) that toppled over on Friday around 11.30am was at least 25 years old. It had a narrow buttress or base, but appeared healthy. That is what surprised Paribhasha Mishra, who lives in the building next to the tree. She saw the tree fall and crush her car and some others when there was no wind.
“I often sit and work in my car before leaving for the office. Today, I could have been in my car but I was planning to leave when I saw the tree falling from my window. I cannot understand how this healthy tree got knocked down,” said Mishra, whose new sedan was crushed by the trunk.
