Travellers using disused car park off main road in Bingham as a 'pit stop'

Irish travellers who've made a disused car park their base in Bingham say they're using the site as a 'pit stop'. The group have set up camp at a spot in Nottingham Road, off the A46.

Around eight caravans arrived at the site around a week ago. And members of the group told Nottinghamshire Live on Monday (April 11) they would leave the following day.

About 10 adults, children and dogs make up the group. And members of the community said they were using the site as a "pit stop". It comes days after travellers pitched up in Edwalton.

Members of the travelling community were seen in Landmere Lane, near the Notcutts Garden Centre and the new Edwalton Retail Park, home to a new McDonald's, Aldi and Greggs. In a statement issued on Facebook, Conservative Councillor Jonathan Wheeler, who represents West Bridgford South on Nottinghamshire County Council and sits on Rushcliffe Borough Council, said it was down to the landowner to serve an eviction notice.

"I understand the concern about the traveller encampment, judging by the number of emails and private messages I have received," said Cllr Wheeler on Saturday (April 9). "The encampment is on private land, therefore it is a civil matter and up to the landowner to serve notice.

"I have been liaising with my colleague Cllr [Simon] Robinson [the leader of the borough council] and I know that RBC have offered assistance. I have also been communicating with police inspector Rob Lawton and asked for extra patrols. Rest assured all is being down to move on the illegal encampment."

It comes just weeks after a group of travellers were forced to leave a car park at the Redfield Way Boulevard Retail Park, off the A52 Clifton Boulevard, near the Dusk Till Dawn Poker Club and Casino.
