Travellers pitch up caravans at Newark Community Centre

A group of travellers have pitched up their caravans on the grounds of a Nottinghamshire community centre. Residents first reported seeing the travellers on Monday, July 12, behind the Bridge Community Centre, in Lincoln Road in Newark.

It it believed that the group have relocated to the site from elsewhere in the area. There are several caravans on the land, which is owned by the Newark and Sherwood District Council.

A Newark and Sherwood District Council spokesperson said: “We are aware that a group of travellers have relocated to the Bridge Community Centre site. "Officers have attended and completed welfare assessments which we are required to do.

"This land is owned by the district council and we are taking appropriate action to seek possession of the land as soon as possible.” Residents in Newark have also seen other groups of travellers in recent weeks, including at the former Lilley and Stone school site and The Newark Academy, both on London Road.
