Travellers move from Nottingham park after bailiffs arrive

A group of travellers have moved on from land near Victoria Embankment after council officials arrived. Community protection officers and bailiffs could be seen at the Meadows Recreation Ground, behind the War Memorial at the embankment, on the afternoon of Friday, May 20.

Photographs showed two Nottingham City Council community protection cars and a community protection van in a car park. On Saturday, May 21 the field was empty.

It comes almost a week after more than 20 caravans were spotted on the playing fields near the River Trent on Sunday, May 15.

The city council said legal proceedings had started on Monday after a failure to comply with an eviction notice. Some of the Irish travellers spoke to Nottinghamshire Live on Monday and spoke about their lives, stating they had "nothing to be ashamed of". It is unclear whether it is the same group currently at the site.

Councillor Michael Edwards, who represents the Meadows ward at Nottingham City Council, said the community reaction to the encampment had been "mixed", adding: "There's a tolerance of ways of life, but there was concern about what it could mean for the site."
