Travel insurance and flight cancellations - everything you need to know

As the summer holidays roll closer, some soon-to-be jet setters are naturally becoming nervous.

Around the UK, airports and airlines are struggling with the surge of customers while dealing with a staff shortage, leading to travel providers scaling back on services.

Long queues at some airports have led a number of travellers to miss their flights while airlines such as easyJet and British Airways have been cancelling a number of flights, with some being last minute.

It has left a number of prospective holidaymakers wondering whether it is just better to cancel their holiday all together.

However before you go ahead and hit that cancel button, it is worth check how much money you could lose and what can travel insurance cover.

If the airline cancels your flight

If the airline cancels your flight, they have to offer you a refund or an alternative flight to get you to your destination - even if it's with another airline.

In addition, customers are due compensation of either £220 (for flights of under 1,500km) or £350 (longer flights).

If you have to stay over night, airlines should provide somewhere for you to stay and meals - if you don't get offered that, keep the receipt and claim it back.

Your travel insurance may also cover any costs for food and for cancelled flights too. Depending on the insurance cover, you can also claim for issues such as missing your coach to the airport.

Your travel insurance may also cover costs of accommodation if your flight is cancelled by the airline.

What if I cancel my flight?

If you want to cancel your flight, each airline provides its own cancellation/refund policy.

Depending on when you booked it, you may have to pay an added fee and receive only a certain amount of money back.

As for travel insurance, a standard policy would usually cover flight cancellations for reasons such as redundancy, bereavement or serious illness, any medical treatment needed while you’re away. It could also cover you if you need to leave early due to an emergency and losing your belongings.
