When you’re travelling as far as the Asia Pacific region, you want to get things right. There’s little point sitting on a plane for sometimes upwards of 11 hours just to traipse around holiday cliches and jostle for a good selfie spot with countless other tourists.

When seeking travel tips, you’ll discover that the internet is awash with “best things to do in Singapore”, or “what to do in Sydney”-style pieces. But there is a better way to find the hidden travel gems at your chosen destination. Enter the concierges.

Hilton’s concierges don’t just work at their hotel locations – they entertain friends, wow their children and impress their parents there too. They live and breathe their local areas, so if you tap into their knowledge, you’ll discover authentic tips to make your adventure all the more memorable …

Winson Wang, at Hilton Shanghai City Center

Winson Wang has been a concierge for 20 years, and joined Hilton Shanghai City Center when it opened in 2024. “Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of helping guests from all over the world discover the hidden corners, flavours and stories of Shanghai,” he says. “Being able to connect travellers with authentic local experiences is what keeps me passionate about this role every single day.”

Local charm
If you’re looking for some cute date inspiration while in Shanghai, Wang recommends a stroll around “a beautifully restored cultural and creative park” near the hotel, called Columbia Circle. “The mix of historic architecture, art spaces and stylish cafes makes it an ideal place for a quiet walk, before enjoying a drink at one of the hotel’s cozy bars. The park is a spot that locals love for its charm and slightly hidden, understated romance.”

Eat in Shanghainese style
Meanwhile, if you need a restaurant recommendation, he has you covered. “One of my favourite places to visit with friends and family is Fu 1088, a beautifully restored Shanghai villa that serves refined Shanghainese cuisine. It feels like stepping into an elegant private home from old Shanghai, with each dining room set inside a different historic chamber.” If you’re struggling to decide on what to try, Winson highlights the smoked fish, “a Shanghainese appetiser” full of rich flavour, as well as the pork belly. “The ambience alone makes it a memorable experience, especially for guests who want to discover the city’s heritage through food,” says Wang. “Fu 1088 offers an authentic, intimate taste of Shanghai, making it one of my top recommendations for a true local dining experience.”

Ali Saifuddin Bin Husin, at Hilton Singapore Orchard

With more than two decades of experience in the hospitality industry, Ali Saifuddin Bin Husin – now working as the chief concierge of Hilton Singapore Orchard – has a wealth of knowledge to help guests enjoy a memorable stay.

The home of the Singapore sling
The Singapore sling is an iconic, signature cocktail, so a visit to the country is not complete without one. And the best place to experience it is where it was born, at Raffles’ Long Bar, says Ali Saifuddin. Additionally, you might want to try Offtrack, an “upcoming cocktail spot, serving cult classic cocktails and recently ranked 23 in Asia’s 50 best bars 2025”.

A city oasis
Not far from Hilton Singapore Orchard, you’ll find Fort Canning Park, which Ali Saifuddin recommends for a peaceful morning walk with some historical and cultural significance. “During World War II, the British used Fort Canning as their command centre,” he says. “The Battle Box, an underground bunker, was where the decision to surrender Singapore to the Japanese was made. Fort Canning is also known as Bukit Larangan or Forbidden Hill as it’s believed to be the burial site of ancient Malay kings and place of spiritual importance.”

Carlos Baselga Silva, at Hilton Sydney

Moving from Spain to Australia in 2016, Carlos Baselga Silva completed a BA in international tourism and hotel management. Having been appointed as chief concierge at Hilton Sydney early this year, Baselga Silva has lots of tips and tricks for an enjoyable stay in Sydney.

A view without the viewers
Sydney has plenty of historical and cultural spots to enjoy, but Baselga Silva has a tip to help you enjoy the sights without the bustle. “A favourite hidden gem is the harbour Bridgeclimb Pylon Lookout & Museum [reopening after renovations in 2026] – it offers incredible views without the crowds, and it’s surprisingly interesting if you enjoy architecture or history.” And if you happen to visit over the weekend, you’ll be able to enjoy the Rocks markets too, “a great way to experience local makers and food stalls in a lively atmosphere”.

A quiet spot for two
As for a date night that will see sparks flying, he recommends Neptune’s Grotto, a restaurant near to the hotel itself. “[It’s] a beautifully designed, intimate dining spot with a charming ambience and creative European-inspired dishes,” he says. “Its warm lighting and relaxed sophistication make it a wonderful choice for a romantic evening out.”

Ronald Ragas, at Hilton Kuala Lumpur

To say that Ronald Ragas has a ton of experience as a concierge would be an understatement. Starting his career in 1996, Ragas joined Hilton Kuala Lumpur in 2007, where he still works to this day with a “passion for service and genuine hospitality”. With almost 20 years’ experience at the hotel, he has a host of recommendations for visitors to help them enjoy their stay.

Cocktails to write home about
For guests who “appreciate beautifully crafted cocktails”, Ragas has just the place. “Penrose has quickly become a favourite in the neighbourhood,” he says. “Its sleek, minimalist design and classic counter-seating create the perfect setting to enjoy thoughtful, precision-made drinks that encourage conversation and a genuine sense of connection.”

Surround yourself with nature
And if you’re looking to immerse yourself in the nature of Kuala Lumpur, Ragas recommends the Perdana Botanical Garden, just a 10-minute walk from the hotel. “It offers a serene retreat where lush greenery and peaceful walking paths create a beautiful contrast to the city’s vibrant pace.” It also has the benefit of additional activities, with Ragas highlighting the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park and the Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park. “[It’s] a perfect escape for nature lovers, families and anyone seeking a quiet moment surrounded by wildlife and natural beauty.”

Tran Duc Kien, at Hilton Saigon

Tran Duc Kien, chief concierge at Hilton Saigon, is a member of the prestigious concierge network Les Clefs D’or. “My passion lies in creating unforgettable experiences for our guests by offering personalised recommendations and fulfilling their unique needs,” Tran says. “For me, guest satisfaction isn’t just a goal – it’s my personal mission and commitment.”

A moment of reflection
If you’re looking to immerse yourself in the history of Vietnam, Tran recommends a visit to the War Remnants Museum. “A profound reminder of Vietnam’s journey toward peace, this museum moves hearts and sparks reflection,” he says. “It’s a place where history speaks, inviting visitors to understand the resilience of a nation.”

Dinner is a show
And just five minutes away by taxi, or a pleasant stroll from the hotel, Tran recommends restaurant Hoa Túc. “Located in a former French colonial building, Hoa Túc offers a unique blend of traditional Vietnamese flavours with modern culinary techniques,” Tran says. “It’s known for its beautiful ambiance, which combines classic Vietnamese design with a stylish, contemporary twist. This is a great spot for guests seeking an authentic dining experience, without the touristy feel.”

Not only that, but there’s an open kitchen, allowing diners to watch as their meals are prepared. “It’s a spacious and welcoming spot with a relaxed but refined vibe, making it suitable for everyone, from casual dinners to special occasions.” Tran’s recommended dishes include the prawn and squid rolls, crab and shrimp with pink pomelo salad, Hoa Túc’s signature cubed beef fillet, and the seafood fried rice pineapple boat.
