September is the best month to travel overseas for a break, according to may experienced travellers. There's a whole host of reasons why this off-peak month is becoming to most popular time to get away for holidaymakers who want to avoid high-season hassle.
There's no need to fight by a sunbed by the hotel pool, normally packed venues are less-crowded and the weather is usually very pleasant - especially in the most popular Mediterranean resorts. As another bonus, travel is usually cheaper out of school holidays, so September is a winner all-round.
Here are some of the main reasons why September is best for a break, according to experts at TravelWhich?
Lower prices in resort and cheaper holidays
Prices rocket during the peak summer months, but it's amazing how much can be saved by waiting until September to jet away. A week’s four-star break to Zante with Jet2Holidays was £532 cheaper for a couple travelling in mid-September compared to August, according to TravelWhich?.
Budget airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair have recently announced cut-price fare offers, while tour operators like Jet2holidays have also introduced various deals.
Fewer travel headaches
There's less risk of travel disruption with early-season issues mostly cleared up. Airport and airline staff were laid off in their thousands when travel ground to a halt in 2020. Passenger numbers are rising again, and even though flight cancellations are predicted to continue into autumn, there’s less chance of delays and hold-ups.
Strike action is less likely. However, there is still the threat of workers walking out at airports across Europe, while both Ryanair and easyJet workers have taken part in industrial action this summer.
Remaining warm but not so many people
Temperatures regularly nudge 27C in the Mediterranean but there's still enough space on the beach for everyone. Surprisingly, the beach is still an attractive option for UK holidaymakers. The sea around many parts of the UK coastline is typically warmest at this time having had all summer to warm up.
Helping the environment
An off-peak holiday avoids adding to the crowds that contribute to over-tourism, which can threaten ecosystems and damage local landmarks. Visitor numbers to Spain, Italy and Greece are usually down by a third compared with August, so there's less pressure on local attractions.
Great destinations
Whether it's a long-haul trip, late summer sunshine or even a staycation, September can tick every box. Relaxing quieter beaches, less-stressed airport experience and lower holiday costs compared to peak summer months are hard to beat.
