Travel chaos expected all day at Glasgow Central due to 'damaged wires and train'

PEOPLE travelling through Glasgow Central have been warned to expect cancellations, disruption, and delays throughout Friday after a “failure of the electricity supply” hit the busy train station.

Some services have been suspended and replacement buses deployed as engineers deal with damaged overhead lines and a damaged train in Glasgow’s southside.

Network Rail has warned to expect disruption until “at least” 5pm this evening.

Trains running through Glasgow Central low level, however, are unaffected.

A ScotRail statement said: “We have been advised by Network Rail that there has been a failure of the electricity supply at Glasgow Central.

“Train services running to and from this station may be cancelled, delayed or revised.

“Please check your journey on our app or website.”

The operator said that the following services are suspended:

  • Glasgow Central - Neilston
  • Glasgow Central - Newton
  • Glasgow Central circle services
  • Glasgow Central - Barrhead
  • Glasgow Central - Kilmarnock
  • Glasgow Central - East Kilbride

ScotRail added: “Our colleagues at Network Rail are on-site and are continuing to investigate the fault.

“Early indications show disruption lasting until 17:00 this evening.”

Network Rail said: “We've identified damaged overhead wires at Muirhouse, near Pollokshields East station.”

“Initial indications from those on site suggest repairs will take until at least 17:00 tonight, though we'll provide a more robust timescale as soon as we can,” the service added.

“Our initial priority is dealing with two trains in the area – we're working with @ScotRail to move passengers affected back to Glasgow Central.

“Once done, we'll work with ScotRail to move the damaged train itself, so our engineers can begin repairing the overhead wires.”

Network Rail then shared images showed the damage near Pollokshields East station.

"This is a cantilever, which holds the overhead wires in position. Three of these have been damaged and need to be repaired before it's safe to run trains again," the service said.
