Transport for Wales to 'start to reintroduce' a full timetable after six weeks of emergency schedule

Transport for Wales has said it will start to bring back services but there is still no fixed date for a full resumption despite six weeks of "emergency" timetable.

TfW first announced the changes in December, which included the cancellation of certain routes and long delays on others. This was further restricted in January.

With thousands of workers returning to offices across Wales, trains have becoming busy again.

Back in December, TfW announced an emergency rail timetable, which equated to a reduction of 10-15% of the standard service. They blamed this on staff absence due to the Omicron wave of Covid-19.

However, with staff absences continuing to increase, the decision was taken to further reduce services on January 3. This represented an additional 10-15% reduction in services.

This reduction has had a number of consequences, namely carriage overcrowding. Last month, WalesOnline reported on the 'outrage' as passengers were packed into train carriages on Transport For Wales service.

Now, TfW say they are starting to reinstate those routes, but have not announced a date for this to take place.

A spokesperson for Transport for Wales said: “Following the introduction of reduced timetables in December 2021, due to Covid 19-related absences, we are now pleased to be in a position to begin to reinstate services across Wales.

“It is a complex undertaking, but our intention is to gradually reinstate all services removed in December and January over the coming weeks, when we are confident we can sustainably deliver them, subject to the continued decline in staff sickness due to Covid.

“We would like to thank our customers for their understanding over this challenging period.”

The cancelled routes include the new direct service between Newport and Crosskeys, which resumed at the beginning of December.

Since January, the following routes have been replaced by bus services:

- Llandudno-Blaenau Ffestiniog
- Chester-Liverpool Lime Street
- Newport-Crosskeys

In addition, the following routes have seen significant delays and cancellations:

- Treherbert-Cardiff Central
- Pontypridd-Cardiff
- Cardiff-Barry Island/Bridgend
- Penarth-Cardiff-Rhymney
- Cardiff Central-Radyr via the City Line
- Cardiff Bay-Coryton
