Transformation plan for Beeston care home shut after damning report found it unsafe

A transformation plan has been put forward for a vacant care home that was closed because it was unsafe. It has been proposed to convert the old Beeston Lodge Nursing Home on the corner of Meadow Road and Lily Grove, Beeston into 19 apartments.

The 28-room care home was closed and its residents moved elsewhere after a CQC inspection found they were unsafe at the site. It was inspected on December 11, 2020, after which it was determined elderly people living there were at "at risk of ongoing harm".

One resident had not had a bath for over a year and management at the home had not notified the CQC of deaths, incidents and injuries there, according to the report. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue were called to the home on December 22, 2020 along with the ambulance service to help move residents out of the home and into alternative accommodation.

The plans would retain and use the existing window and door openings and keep external alterations to a minimum, according to planning documents. Under the new plans, the existing garden at the rear of the property would be retained for private amenity space and existing car park wrapping around the front of the property would be kept.

Developers said the existing large building was no longer fit for its previous purpose and had "limited future purposes due to its size". They added the proposed design would make use of the existing building features and retains existing window and door openings.

The site's architect said the applicant was willing to negotiate with the local authority about affordable housing provision. It was suggested the design and size of the properties will lend themselves to rent or sale at the more affordable end of the market.

In a planning document, PDG Architectural on behalf of applicant Owen Phillips, said: "The proposals for the above residential development are supportable as the proposals look to re-use an existing building that was no longer viable under its previous use. The proposals also provide much needed housing to the area and make use of an existing derelict site which is in line with a number of the local authority’s planning policy’s."
