Trams suspended on Metrolink Bury and Rochdale lines as emergency works take place

Widespread disruption hit Greater Manchester's tram lines this morning thanks to emergency repair works. Metrolink services were cancelled on the Bury line, with services suspended along the entire route.

Services on the Rochdale line were also not going into the city centre and only running between the Rochdale Town Centre and Monsall stops.

Metrolink says the problem was due to damage on the overhead power line near to the Irk Valley, in north Manchester. Images released by the tram operator showed emergency repairs taking place this morning (May 6).

The issue also meant that trams are not currently stopping at Victoria station as normal. Services on the East Didsbury line are running to Exchange Square.

TfGM’s Head of Metrolink, Danny Vaughan, said: “I’d like to apologise to customers whose journey is affected by today’s disruption.

“Engineers have been working throughout the night trying to fix the damage and Metrolink staff are also out across the network to help passengers.

“We’re working hard to resolve the problem and return all services as soon as possible, but anyone planning to use Metrolink, particularly the Bury or Rochdale via Oldham lines, should check the latest information before they travel and allow extra time for their journey.”

In an update at 11am, Metrolink posted: "UPDATE: Services are travelling through, however we currently have delays on the Bury, East Didsbury and Rochdale lines. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause."
