Trains stopped after woman climbed onto tracks and started walking down them

A woman caused train services to be halted after she walked along the railway tracks at Neath Train Station, Network Rail has confirmed. British Transport Police had to be called to the station after the woman, who has not been identified, stepped onto the tracks shortly before 8.30pm on Thursday evening.

One witness at the station said they had seen the woman go onto the tracks and said their train journey was delayed by an hour while the incident was dealt with. For more Neath and Port Talbot stories, sign up to our newsletter.

Network Rail confirmed all trains running through Neath were temporarily stopped as a result of a "person on the track". A spokesperson for the firm said: "Trains running through Neath were delayed yesterday (7 July) owing to a person being reported on the track at 8.20pm.

“All trains in the area were temporarily stopped with British Transport Police attending the scene. The person had left the tracks by 8.50pm when train services resumed. On our logs it looks like it didn’t cause any cancellations but did cause some delays of between 30 mins to one hour to the following services: GWR 20:23 Swansea - Paddington TfW 18:50 Carmarthen - Cardiff Central TfW 19:48 Cardiff Central - Carmarthen GWR 17:18 Paddington - Carmarthen."

A spokesperson for British Transport Police confirmed officers attended and said: "Officers were called to Neath station at 8.20pm last night following reports of a woman on the tracks. Officers attended and the woman had left the tracks. Enquiries into the incident are ongoing."
