Trains cancelled and road closed as car crashes into level crossing barriers

A car has crashed into level crossing barriers in Wirral.

Trains have been cancelled due to the crash at the Leasowe level crossing at Reeds Lane. Merseyrail services on the New Brighton line and West Kirkby line are currently at a standstill, due to the incident.

A spokesperson for the train service has said that delays and disruption should be expected into the afternoon. Currently, all other Merseyside lines are running as scheduled.

Reeds Lane is also closed in both directions with police at the scene helping to divert traffic between Reedville Grove and Kingsmead Road. A spokesperson for Merseyside police said: "We are appealing for information following a report of a van going through a train barrier at Leasowe Station today, Friday 24 March. At around midday today it was reported that a white van went through the level crossing barrier on Reeds Lane and drove off.

"The van was found abandoned nearby. Road closures are in place on Reeds Lane while the incident is being dealt with.

"We ask that drivers avoid the area and find an alternative route. We thank you for your patience as we deal with this incident.

"Anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage on this incident is asked to contact @MerPolCC on Twitter or ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre’ on Facebook with reference 389 of 24 March."
