Rail passengers in London and across the UK are suffer major travel disruption on Friday due to a fault with the radio communication system used by train drivers and signallers.
The issue has thrown journeys into turmoil nationwide, with commuters at some of London’s busiest stations hit by delays and cancellations.
National Rail Enquiries said the fault with the onboard GSM-R system caused delays to train departures, while operators including South Western Railway and the Elizabeth line reported disruptions.
In London, the following stations and services have been impacted:
Waterloo
Several South Western Railway services at Waterloo are experiencing delays. Departures to Alton, Exeter St Davids, Weymouth, Shepperton, and Chessington South are running late.
Arrivals are also impacted, with delays reported on trains from Bournemouth, Weymouth, Honiton, and Southampton Central.
Euston
At Euston, West Midlands Trains services to Birmingham New Street and Tring are running late, while Avanti West Coast services to Glasgow Central and Manchester Piccadilly are also delayed. London Overground services to Watford Junction have been cancelled entirely.
Victoria
At Victoria station, Southeastern services to Dartford via Bexleyheath and Ramsgate via Chatham are delayed. Southern trains heading to Portsmouth Harbour and Bognor Regis via Horsham, as well as West Croydon via Crystal Palace, are also facing delays.
London Kings Cross
At Kings Cross, arrivals from Edinburgh (London North Eastern Railway), Cambridge (Great Northern), and Skipton (London North Eastern Railway) are either delayed or cancelled.
A Network Rail spokesperson confirmed that the fault, which prevents automatic logins to the radio system, is under investigation. While the backup manual system is being used, it has caused delays across the network.
