Glasgow train strikes November: RMT issues update as three days of industrial action suspended

Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) has suspended train strikes after securing intensive negotiations with rail bosses.

The RMT Network Rail members were planning on three days of walkouts over November, bringing the majority of trains to a standstill across the country. While ScotRail is not associated with this wave of strikes, the Scottish train firm had warned passengers that most services would be cancelled.

The union has suspended planned strikes less than 24 hours they were meant to walk out. The industrial action was set to see Network Rail staff strike on November 5, 7 and 9. The union will now enter into a period of intensive negotiations with Network Rail and the train operating companies.

While the three days of industrial action are suspended, RMT has said the dispute 'remains very much live' and the union is continuing its re-ballot of members to secure a fresh mandate for action with the result due on November 15.

This does not involve RMT ScotRail staff who have planned a mass amount of strikes over December, although there has been no formal confirmation yet as the dispute between the train firm and union continues.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: “The threat of strike action and our strongly supported industrial campaign has made the rail employers see sense.

“We have always wanted to secure a negotiated settlement and that is what we will continue to push for in this next phase of intensive talks.

“Our priority is our members, and we are working towards securing a deal on job security, a decent pay rise and good working conditions.

“Our re-ballot remains live and if we have to take strike action during the next six months to secure a deal, we will.”
