Trail of destruction as Audi smashes into Jaguar, shop and parked Mini

A trail of destruction was left along a main road at rush hour after a crash between an Audi and a Jaguar.

Picton Road in Wavertree was closed shortly after 4pm on Thursday, December 1 following a crash between an Audi Q7 and a Jaguar X-Type. Following the crash the Audi smashed into the bollards lining the pavement and took out a shop display outside Supersave Bargain.

The car finally came to a stop when it hit a Mini Cooper parked outside Affordable Car Finance - a used car dealership. Three children traveling in the Audi were taken to Alder Hey Children's Hospital as a precaution but are not believed to be injured. The ECHO understands there were no other injuries.

The ECHO arrived on Picton Road shortly after it was reopened at around 5.10pm. Fragments of wood, plastic and metal littered the road outside Supersave Bargain. The usually pristine shop front stacked high with goods was littered with debris.

Footage seen by the ECHO showed the car mount the pavement and smash through the display outside the store. A number of staff outside the bargain homeware store were seen cleaning up the aftermath of the incident.

The owner of the store said he was working on the till when the incident happened but ran out after hearing the smash. He told the ECHO : "The two cars smashed into each other. The car smashed all the stuff outside the shop and then went through these posts. There's loads of stuff out the back that's been smashed to bits.

"It was a big shock. I thought it was just two cars hitting each other but then came out and saw all this. We've been cleaning the front and we'll see what happens now. We have a crime reference number from the police.

"Usually there are people walking up and down the pavement. At the time there was no one working outside the front of the shop, but there could have been. I think the driver was okay. The main thing was no one was hurt."

Traffic remained heavily backed up on Picton Road even after police reopened it. Traffic monitor INRIX showed "slow traffic due to an accident" hours after the incident. The Audi remained at the scene where it had crashed.

Next door to Supersave Bargain is Occasions Florist. Two staff members told the ECHO from behind the counter: "We didn't see it but just heard the screech and then the bang. The bollard was taken out from outside the shop. The driver then carried all the way down.

"It was really busy with little children going up and down the road at the time. There was an accident not too long ago where a driver went into the side of someone just outside. I was just about to bring the van around and load it for a funeral. We always watch ourselves when we step out."

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police told the ECHO no one was arrested in relation to the crash.
