As Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc across six states, claiming the lives of 215 individuals, one heroic act stood out amidst the tragedy. Boone McCrary, a 32-year-old emergency room nurse and avid outdoorsman, lost his life while attempting to rescue a man stranded by floodwaters in Tennessee.

McCrary, accompanied by his girlfriend and loyal chocolate lab, Moss, set out on his fishing boat to reach David Boutin, who was trapped by the rising waters. However, debris in the water caused the boat's motor to malfunction, leading to a tragic accident where the boat capsized after colliding with a bridge support.

Despite the valiant efforts of McCrary, he and Moss did not survive the ordeal. McCrary's body was found four days later, while Moss was discovered deceased near the boat. Boutin, the man McCrary sought to rescue, expressed deep sorrow upon learning of McCrary's sacrifice, referring to him as his 'guardian angel.'

McCrary's sister, Laura Harville, recounted how her brother, known for his adventurous spirit, had offered help via social media during the hurricane. McCrary's selfless act of bravery exemplified his dedication to aiding others in need.

The search for McCrary involved a massive volunteer effort, with hundreds combing the area using various tools and techniques. Despite the challenging conditions, McCrary's body was eventually located 21 river miles away from the accident site, highlighting the force of the floodwaters that swept him away.

Boutin, who survived the harrowing ordeal, expressed gratitude for McCrary's sacrifice and the outpouring of support he received. McCrary's colleagues at Greenville Community Hospital remembered him for his kindness, compassion, and unwavering commitment to helping those in distress.

McCrary's final social media post, a TikTok video showcasing his love for adventure and zest for life, encapsulated his fearless spirit and determination to live life to the fullest.

As communities mourn the loss of McCrary and other victims of Hurricane Helene, his legacy of courage and compassion will endure as a testament to the power of selflessness and heroism in the face of adversity.
