Mexico President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has spoken out against the treatment of migrant workers in the United States following the tragic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. The collapse resulted in the loss of several lives, including that of 35-year-old Alejandro Hernández Fuentes from Mexico and 26-year-old Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera from Guatemala.
Maryland State Police have identified these two individuals, along with four other construction workers presumed dead, who were from Guatemala and El Salvador. The incident occurred when a cargo ship collided with one of the bridge's pillars, causing a section of the bridge to collapse.
Col. Roland L. Butler Jr., superintendent of Maryland State Police, announced that divers had located a red pickup truck submerged under approximately 25 feet of water in the middle span of the bridge. Tragically, the bodies of Alejandro Hernández Fuentes and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera were found trapped inside the vehicle.
One of the victims, Maynor Yassir Suazo Sandoval, a 38-year-old from Honduras, was also identified. He hailed from a rural mountainous area in northwestern Honduras.
López Obrador expressed his concern over the dangerous working conditions faced by migrant workers, emphasizing that they often undertake risky jobs at odd hours. He criticized certain politicians in the United States for their perceived insensitivity and irresponsibility towards these individuals.
The recovery efforts have now transitioned into a salvage operation due to the challenging conditions surrounding the wreckage. The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the perils faced by migrant workers who contribute to various industries across the United States.
